Calendula Castile Soap Bar

Nama “Castile” soap berasal dari a region in Spain that produced 100% olive oil soap bar. In the beginning, to be called as Castile soap, the soap should be made using olive oil from the Kingdom of Castilla, Spain – jadi semacam indicator geografis. Sejalan dengan waktu, castile soap bisa diproduksi menggunakan olive oil yang berasal dari daerah lain, dan saat ini most of castile soap yang ada di pasaran bukanlah 100% olive oil soap. Castile soap dalam banyak hal, diterjemahkan sebagai sabun yang menggunakan a mix of vegetable oils (with minimum 40% olive oil). Salah satu merek castile soap terkenal, komposisi utamanya malah coconut oil.

Pure olive oil soap will provide a very moisturising soap for face and body. I made this soap for all purpose soap – hand, body and face, terutama karena eczema di telapak tangan. Mind you, while this soap is suitable for dry skin as it is very conditioning, this soap is taking a longer time to trace, taking a longer time to cure. This soap is slimy and doesn’t lather much. Be patient is the key for making pure 100% olive oil soap. Let’s start!

Equipment

• Digital kitchen scale

• Silicone mold/ kotak karton bekas susu UHT

• Whisk/stick blender

• Spatula

• Sendok melamine/kayu

• Gelas plastic/ glass beaker

• Panic stainless steel/ ember plastic

• Plastic dan handuk

• Safety equipment: mask, gloves, google

Ingredients

• 85.4gr Calendula water

• 38.2gr Lye (NaOH, Sodium Hydroxide)

• 300gr Calendula infused olive oil

• 10gr fragrance oil/essential oil (optional)

How to Make

1. Gunakan safety equipment

2. Timbang semua bahan sesuai formula

3. Tuangkan NaOH/Lye ke dalam air dengan hati-hati

4. Aduk hingga tercampur sempurna dengan menggunakan sendok melamine/kayu

5. Let it cool - tunggu sampai campuran air dan soda api mencapai suhu ruangan

6. Masukkan olive oil sesuai takaran ke dalam panci stainless steel

7. Tuang campuran air dan lye ke dalam panci yang berisi olive oil

8. Aduk dengan menggunakan whisk/stick blender sampai mecapai tahap trace – yaitu ketika campuran minyak dan air+soda api menyatu, ditandai dengan warna menjadi keruh, texture mengental)

9. Masukkan fragrance/essential oil (optional), aduk lagi selama 4 detik

10. Tuang ke dalam cetakan

11. Tutup cetakan dengan plastic dan handuk

12. Let it sit for 48-72 hours

13. Setelah 48-72 jam, keluarkan dari cetakan dan potong-potong

14. Let it sit for 8 weeks (or 3 to 6 months better) – ini disebut sebagai proses curing, yaitu proses sabun menjadi padat, dengan penguapan sisa air, sekaligus proses saponifikasi yang lebih sempurna

15. Sabun siap digunakan!!

Notes

There are two types of olive oil: extra virgin olive oil and olive pomace oil. For this soap (and any other rinse off products), I use olive pomace oil. Feel free to use extra virgin olive oil, but you need to recalculate the amount of water and lye.

Calendula water means brewed water with calendula petals. You can use other flower petals or herbs such as camomile, lavender
