Bikin Sediri Non-Greasy Muscle Balm that Works

DIY Muscle Balm

I think I have reached this age where every now and then I need balsam to reduce muscle and joint pain. Pegal-pegal di pundak karena salah posisi pas lagi kerja? Sering banget. Terlalu banyak duduk, kurang gerak, definitely sering and then I will need this muscle balm.

I make myself muscle balm, dengan memanfaatkan bahan yang ada. Please note, this time I don’t use beeswax. I need balm that is light in texture and easy to spread. Itu sebabnya I use stearic acid- choose the vegetable-derived. Stearic acid ini fatty acids yang bertindak sebagai thickener, bikin balm jadi lebih keras dan juga sebagai emollient. Dengan pakai stearic acid, we can reduce the amount of wax needed sehingga hasil akhir balm-nya gampang dioles, engga tacky, engga legket tapi masih feel buttery.

Untuk bahan aktif di muscle balm ini, I use wintergreen essential oil. This oil is listed in my 5+1 Must Have Essential Oil dan it is perfect to use in this balm karena wintergreen essential oil ini mengandung Methyl Salicylate: 96.0-99.5% which make it very potent to reduce pain and inflammation. Another herb I use for muscle balm adalah cabe kering – iya chili flakes yang biasa kita pake untuk masak itu. Itu sebabnya the color of this balm is red – atau merah orange. This is how to make infused oil. Why chili flakes? Karena chili mengandung capsaicin yang bermanfaat to treat muscle and joint pain. I also use menthol flakes (menthol crystals) di pembuatan balm ini. Menthol flakes ini berasal dari proses kristalisasi mentha arvensis (peppermint) yang berguna di dalam balm ini sebagai muscle relaxant, dan memberikan cooling sensation.


  • Glass beaker

  • Glass stirrer

  • Glass jar atau aluminum jar

  • Digital kitchen scale


  • 10gr castor oil

  • 10gr olive oil

  • 10gr cocoa butter

  • 14gr stearic acid

  • 6gr essential oil

  • A dash of menthol flakes

How to Make

  1. Timbang semua bahan (kecuali essential oil) dan masukkan ke dalam glass beaker

  2. Lelehkan dengan menggunakan metode double boiler

  3. Setelah semua bahan meleleh dengan sempurna, angkat glass beaker dari atas pan

  4. Leave it for about 15 minutes

  5. Setelah glass beaker terasa hangat, masukkan essential oil dan aduk

  6. Tuang ke dalam glass jar/aluminum jar

  7. Leave it to cool, kemudian tutup jarnya

  8. Your muscle balm is ready to use!


Definitely you can substitute wintergreen essential oil with other oils yang relevant to help with muscle and joint aches, such as ginger, peppermint, helichrysum and marjoram
